I Broke The “Rules” On my Antique Dresser — Specialty Paints for the Win

Does using spray paint on furniture count as cheating? Do you have to paint every inch of a dresser? And does a more difficult technique automatically make a furniture redesign better?

Not in my workshop.

In this episode of The Furniture Artist’s Resource Guide, I’m taking you behind the scenes of the antique dresser I redesigned for our RV. Instead of using a traditional furniture paint for the base coat, I combined spray paints, acrylic stencil paint and several different metallics to create the finish I had pictured in my head. Along the way, I’m sharing some of the lessons I’ve learned about recoat times, primer color, metallic coverage, stencil care, topcoat sheen—and what happened when a spray can started spitting and accidentally gave me exactly the effect I wanted.

This isn’t a step-by-step dresser tutorial. It’s about learning what different products can do so you can choose the right one for your project. Sometimes working smarter really is the better way.

In This Episode

  • Why quick and easy doesn’t mean cutting corners
  • How I used spray paint, stencil paint and metallics on an antique dresser
  • Spray-paint mistakes I’ve made—and what they taught me
  • Why different metallic paints create very different effects
  • How the right topcoat can protect your finish without dulling the glitz
  • Why knowing your products gives you more creative freedom
  • Why the hardest way isn’t necessarily the best way

If you’re listening and thinking, "I wish I knew how to make those decisions for myself," you can learn. Furniture Flipping Blueprint gives you step-by-step guidance for developing your furniture-redesign and flipping skills, along with a community of furniture artists who understand the questions, mistakes, victories and learning that happen along the way.

It’s a resource and a group of friends in one place.

Val Frania

Val Frania is a furniture artist, experienced flipper, teacher, podcaster, business owner, wife, mother of 15, grandmother of 21, and firm believer that outdated furniture—and the people standing in front of it—often hold far more potential than anyone realizes.

As the host of the Flipping Furniture for Profit Podcast and founder of the Furniture Flipping Blueprint, Val helps furniture flippers move beyond random advice and frustrating trial and error. She teaches them how to choose worthwhile pieces, create beautiful and lasting finishes, market their work effectively, and build a profitable business without losing their confidence—or their joy—in the process.

Val’s teaching is grounded in years of hands-on experience, continual learning, a healthy distrust of shortcuts that sound too good to be true, and the conviction that beginners deserve clear answers without being made to feel foolish for asking questions. She is known for blending practical instruction with honest stories, humor, encouragement, and faith—because furniture flipping is about more than paint, products, and profit. It is also about creativity, perseverance, confidence, and becoming willing to keep showing up when something doesn’t go as planned.

Through her podcast, online resources, Facebook community, and Furniture Flipping Blueprint membership, Val has created the kind of guidance and community she believes every flipper should have: a place to learn, grow, ask questions, celebrate the wins, laugh about the disasters, and remember that we really are better together.

When she isn’t teaching, recording, or transforming furniture, Val can usually be found managing one of approximately 47 projects, spending time with her enormous family, serving alongside her husband in ministry, escaping to their RV in northern Wisconsin, or bringing home another piece of furniture because it was simply too cool to leave behind.
